Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Information Server Introduction Today's corporate knowledge worker navigates through a complex information technology system that often consists of multiple platforms running software created by different vendors. Many times, it is difficult for users to obtain or share information within their corporation, simply because it is locked in a system that cannot easily communicate with other systems. Rather than a unified whole, such IT systems consist, in reality, of many islands of automation. To help users share and obtain information, these islands must be bridged. But constructing such bridges is a complex task. The solution chosen must match the problem, fit the existing computing environment, work when installed, and be easily maintained. The Cooperative Computing Solution To meet their needs, many companies are turning to Hewlett-Packard’s Cooperative Computing Solutions-client/server systems that bridge islands of automation in order to simplify information access and speed communication. HP’s solutions leverage pre-existing investments in hardware, software, and training by linking them to the favorite tool of your knowledge workers-the desktop computer. In addition, cooperative computing reduces mainframe computing loads by distributing work and service demands across the network. Because it allows users to share peripherals and other network resources, cooperative computing can also reduce hardware costs.A part of Hewlett-Packard’s cooperative computing solution is the HP Enterprise Information Server. Easily installed, managed, and upgraded, HP’s Enterprise Information Server forms the backbone for HP’s family of competitively priced cooperative computing solutions. Benefits Forming the foundation for complete, standards-based, client / server functionality, the HP Enterprise Information Server with HP JoinWare provides connectivity to existing IT systems and manages resources for its clients. When coupled with HP cooperative computing applications, the server can solve problems across your enterprise. Hewlett-Packard’s Cooperative Computing Solutions will: * Protect your investments in hardware, software, and user expertise, by connecting to existing system databases and applications. * Require minimal time for user installation and updates, with HP JoinWare software configuration, distribution and management services for client software. * Guarantee that future upgrades are managed smoothly, through factory-integrated and tested, synchronized hardware and software releases. * Provide easy management, with network and system management tools, including complete desktop services, such as backup and print spooling, for a variety of clients. Value Because the HP Enterprise Information Server forms a bridge to existing systems, it offers superior investment protection of hardware, data and applications. It also addresses MIS concerns by offering easy network and system management solutions. For users, HP offers easy access to enterprise information and network resources, with controlled software installation and release updates. In addition, the HP Enterprise Information Server offers an open, standards-based, scalable server family with connections to legacy systems and applications, as well as a choice of clients. Features The HP Enterprise Information Server consists of several main components and a host of additional features, such as networking, database, application, and messaging connections. One component is HP JoinWare, a tool that will link end users to the system and provide fast, easy, client software deployment services. File and print sharing are facilitated through other client services. Finally, factory integration testing and field consulting services can ensure smooth installation and maintenance, allowing you to get up and running quickly. Computing Platform Based on HP's RISC processor and the UNIX® operating system, the server hardware consists of the HP 9000/800 Models F, G, H, and I Class Business Server family. It comes with software that has been retestedand preloaded at the factory to insure compatibility. Networking Links The HP Enterprise Information Server provides you with networking links for connection to existing systems such as IBM mainframes or AS/400s (connected through SNA and Token Ring); and DEC VAX or Sun workstations and servers (connected through 802.3); as well as wide-area networking services like X.25. Database Connection Database connection to legacy system data such as VSAM, IMS, RMS, and RdB is facilitated through Enterprise Data Access / SQL (by Information Builders). Macintosh users can access corporate data through DAL-the Macintosh Data Access Language. Application Connection HP’s Software Integration Sockets leverages your existing application investment by providing application connection to legacy systems such as MVS, VMS, OS/400 and SunOS. Messaging Connection Messaging connection is facilatated through OSI, X.400 and X. 500, to mail systems such as PROFS and cc;Mail.* Connectivity-HP JoinWare A key component of the HP Enterprise Information Server is HP JoinWare. HP JoinWare will provide you with client services for software configuration, distribution and management. It provides standard scripts containing predefined file names for software purchased in our Cooperative Computing Solution. With this feature, installation becomes quick and easy. With HP JoinWare, client software will be automatically distributed and managed by the server for maintenance, continued ease of installation, and ease of PC LAN management. Tedious floppy loads are thereby eliminated, and installation time is reduced from hours to minutes.HP JoinWare allows the system manager to maintain easy control of users applications, with a choice of security schemes. Users enjoy automatic version checking and notification of new releases through a standardized user environment. HP JoinWare also provides the tools to support client applications unique to each organization. Other Client Services Other client services include file and print sharing of network peripherals with Integrated NetWare, Integrated LANManager and Macintosh Network Services (through PacerShare and PacerPrint), as well as system management facilities for backup and spooling. Testing and Consulting Services To reduce start-up time and alleviate maintenance headaches, HP provides factory integration testing and field consulting services. These services will help you pull the pieces together for faster start- up. We’ve lightened upgrading chores, too. HP provides easy upgrades by managing your update process through controlled, retested software releases. You receive the software you need, all on one convenient and easy-to-install master CD-ROM. Optional Components HP’s Enterprise Integration Server includes a host of optional components that can assist you in providing an integrated solution to your IT challenge. These include: * A wide choice of clients, with HP Vectra PCs and the powerful HP 9000 Series 700 UNIX workstation family. * An enhanced NetStartUp consulting product if you need help getting your client network installed.
